How to use Reduce Picture Size

Compress & Resize photos

This is the default tab when you open the app. It handles single photos or large batches at once.

1. Add your photos

1. Drag photos onto the dropzone, or click it to browse your device. You can select multiple files at once.
2. Each photo appears as a thumbnail with its original file size. Use Add more to bring in additional photos later, or the × on a thumbnail to remove one.

2. Choose how to compress

1. Quality mode: drag the Quality slider (1–100). Lower values shrink the file more but reduce image quality — 70–85 is a good starting range for photos.
2. Max file size mode: enter a target size in KB and the app automatically finds the highest quality that fits under it.

3. Choose how to resize (optional)

1. Original — keep the photo's current dimensions.
2. Percent — scale down by a percentage of the original size.
3. Exact — set a specific width and height in pixels; check Maintain aspect ratio to avoid stretching.
4. Preset — pick a common output size (e.g. social media or web sizes) from the dropdown.

4. Set the output format

Pick JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF (where your browser supports it) from the Format dropdown. Auto-rotate uses the photo's built-in orientation data so it comes out right-side up. Metadata (EXIF/GPS) is stripped automatically whenever a photo is re-encoded — useful if you don't want location data attached to shared photos.

5. Add a watermark (optional)

Turn on Watermark, type your text, and choose its opacity, color, and one of nine positions on the photo (corners, edges, or center).

6. Process and download

1. Click Process all to compress every photo in the batch with your current settings.
2. Each thumbnail updates with a done badge and shows the new file size next to the original, so you can see the savings at a glance.
3. Download photos individually from their thumbnail, or click Download all (.zip) to get every processed photo in one file.
4. The summary panel on the right totals your original size, output size, and overall savings across the whole batch.

Crop, rotate, flip, and redact

Click a thumbnail's edit icon to open the adjustment editor:

• Crop — drag the crop box's corner handle to resize it, or drag the box itself to reposition. Click Reset crop to start over.
• Rotate / flip — use Rotate left, Rotate right, Flip horizontal, and Flip vertical to fix orientation.
• Redact / blur — open this separately to draw boxes over anything that should be permanently pixelated, like a face or a document. It's manual only — nothing is auto-detected — so review each photo yourself before sharing.

Click Apply to save your changes to that photo, or Cancel to discard them.

Animated GIF

Add two or more photos to the batch, then scroll to the Animated GIF section of the settings panel:

1. Set the frame delay in milliseconds (how long each photo shows before advancing).
2. Choose a frame size — smaller frames make a smaller, faster-loading GIF.
3. Click Create animated GIF to combine every photo in the batch into one looping GIF, then download it.

Passport & Visa Photo

Switch to the Passport & Visa Photo tab for country-specific photo sizing and checks.

1. Pick the destination Country — the requirements table below updates with its official dimensions.
2. Set your print resolution (DPI) if you plan to print the photo yourself (300 DPI is a common default).
3. Optionally enable Flatten background to white — this only helps if your background is already one plain, even color; it's basic color-distance math, not real subject cutout, so it won't help against busy or textured backgrounds.
4. Upload a photo, then crop it to the required aspect ratio in the editor that opens.
5. Review the deterministic checks list — dimensions, resolution, format, and file size are verified automatically; anything about pose, lighting, or expression still needs your own judgment.
6. Click Download photo for the single fitted image, or generate a printable sheet (4R, A4, or Letter) with multiple copies laid out for printing at a photo lab.

Themes

Use the theme dropdown in the top bar to switch between Daylight, Darkroom (dark mode), High contrast, and Slate. Your choice is remembered on this device for next time.
