Compress Image to 1MB

The tool below is already set to Max file size: 1000 KB, so every photo you add comes out under 1MB — the size most often asked for by email attachments, document portals with a 1MB limit, and sharing high-quality photos quickly. Add one photo or a batch, tap Process all, and download.

It finds the highest quality that still fits under the limit, and only reduces the pixel dimensions if quality alone can't get there. Most phone photos (3–6MB) drop under 1MB at full resolution with a high quality setting — you rarely need to resize at all. Everything runs in your browser; your photos are never uploaded.

Nothing here yet — add photos above to get started.

Only helps if your background is already one plain color (e.g. a wall) — this is color-distance math, not real subject cutout, so it won't do anything useful against busy or textured backgrounds.

How to compress an image to 1MB

  1. Tap the box above (or drag and drop) to add a photo — JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP all work.
  2. Leave Max file size at 1000 KB, and JPEG as the output format, which gives the smallest files for photos.
  3. If the form also gives exact pixel dimensions, set them under Resize → Exact.
  4. Tap Process all and download — the size shown under each photo is the final file size, under 1MB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to exactly 1MB?

Add it above and tap Process all — the target is preset to 1000 KB. The tool lands as close under the limit as it can at the best possible quality; hitting an exact byte count isn't needed, since upload forms only check the maximum.

Why is the target 1000 KB and not 1024 KB?

Some sites count 1KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. 1000 KB (1,024,000 bytes) passes under either reading of 1MB. You can change the number in the settings panel if you know exactly how your site counts.

My photo still won't go under 1MB — what can I do?

Make sure the output format is JPEG or WebP: PNG is lossless and often can't reach small targets. For very small targets, also reduce the pixel dimensions under Resize. The tool already shrinks dimensions automatically as a last resort.

Will compressing to 1MB make my photo blurry?

Usually not at normal viewing sizes — the tool picks the highest quality that fits, and most photos look close to the original at this size.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser — your photos never leave your device. See the Privacy Policy.
