Compress Image to 500KB

The tool below is already set to Max file size: 488 KB, so every photo you add comes out under 500KB — the size most often asked for by website and blog images, online marketplaces, and upload forms with a 500KB cap. Add one photo or a batch, tap Process all, and download.

It finds the highest quality that still fits under the limit, and only reduces the pixel dimensions if quality alone can't get there. 500KB usually keeps a phone photo near full resolution. Try WebP output for the sharpest result at this size if the destination accepts it. Everything runs in your browser; your photos are never uploaded.

Nothing here yet — add photos above to get started.

Only helps if your background is already one plain color (e.g. a wall) — this is color-distance math, not real subject cutout, so it won't do anything useful against busy or textured backgrounds.

How to compress an image to 500KB

  1. Tap the box above (or drag and drop) to add a photo — JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP all work.
  2. Leave Max file size at 488 KB, and JPEG as the output format, which gives the smallest files for photos.
  3. If the form also gives exact pixel dimensions, set them under Resize → Exact.
  4. Tap Process all and download — the size shown under each photo is the final file size, under 500KB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to exactly 500KB?

Add it above and tap Process all — the target is preset to 488 KB. The tool lands as close under the limit as it can at the best possible quality; hitting an exact byte count isn't needed, since upload forms only check the maximum.

Why is the target 488 KB and not 500 KB?

Some sites count 1KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. 488 KB (499,712 bytes) passes under either reading of 500KB. You can change the number in the settings panel if you know exactly how your site counts.

My photo still won't go under 500KB — what can I do?

Make sure the output format is JPEG or WebP: PNG is lossless and often can't reach small targets. For very small targets, also reduce the pixel dimensions under Resize. The tool already shrinks dimensions automatically as a last resort.

Will compressing to 500KB make my photo blurry?

Usually not at normal viewing sizes — the tool picks the highest quality that fits, and most photos look close to the original at this size.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser — your photos never leave your device. See the Privacy Policy.
